Please join us at Sandy Brown for the first phase of Facehug 04, a collaboration between Chris Kraus and Ana-Maria Hadji-Culea. Chris Kraus is a Los Angeles-based writer and art critic who will be touring Europe this winter with her new book Where Art Belongs, a Semiotexte Intervention. A co-editor of Semiotexte, Kraus’ novels include Torpor, I Love Dick and he forthcoming Summer of Hate. Her writings have been published in May Revue, Texte zur Kunst, Artforum, n+1 and other magazine. In 2008, her early film work was exhibited for the first time in Berlin at Galerie Cinzia Friedlaender.

It may be that art’s job is no longer to produce more suprising images, but to make itself a means of locating today’s corpses. Four of these – disposed of bonding enhancers found in Berlin-Mitte and around the block, were dragged into the gallery the day before their scheduled roundup and stuffed into its waiting room, the storage.

On a wall, another exfoliation carries on in a sanitary environment along the open ends of a cigarette butt, once smoked by Kasper König in the waiting room of an institution, where I was serving cake. In return for a piece, the stub carrying his DNA was secretly removed from the ashtray and encapsulated. In fact, that is all it would take to find out one’s father.

The centrepiece of this inventory, a mass-produced miniature mise-en-scène was given to me as a child. Thinking it was misspelled, it appeared useless. The landscape of roses conjures a vaster one that will acclimatise surplus consonants, vowels and punctuation. This miniature prosthesis is dramatized in a neighbouring YouTube clip in which a rose is performing itself as neither more than what it does nor less than what it can do. Despite displaying a seemingly cumless procrastination, this picture, as most, can’t help but dribble.
